How Do You Know You Are Truly Saved?

August 25, 2026

A few important biblical signs:

  • You trust in Jesus Christ — salvation is received by grace through faith, not by earning it through good works (Ephesians 2:8–9; John 3:16).
  • You have turned from sin toward God — genuine faith produces repentance (Acts 2:38; 1 John 1:8–9).
  • You desire to follow Christ — and a changed life is evidence of genuine faith (John 14:15; James 2:17).
  • You love other Christians — 1 John repeatedly presents love for fellow believers as evidence of spiritual life (1 John 3:14).
  • You persevere in faith — the Christian life isn’t necessarily free from doubt, temptation, or failure, but there is a continuing reliance upon Christ.
  • You have the witness of the Holy Spirit — Romans 8:16 says, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”

One of the most encouraging things is that assurance ultimately rests on Christ, not on how strongly you feel saved today. A Christian can struggle with doubt, fall into sin, or go through seasons where God seems distant without that automatically meaning he isn’t saved.

The basic question isn’t, “Have I become good enough?” but “Am I trusting in Christ—His death and resurrection—as my only hope of reconciliation with God?
